You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.
– C. S. Lewis
This quote motivates and frustrates me because on the surface, it tells me that I can set another goal. What if I don’t want to make another goal? What if I like my life just the way it is and don’t aspire for more? I think the answer to this is – your goal would then be to maintain your life trajectory and that isn’t a bad thing.
If I were advising someone with this goal, I would say plan for keeping that life during challenging times such as now.
Consider what you need for retirement. Plan for loss of income. Plan for changes to your family unit – births, caregiving of parents, moving, emergencies, etc.
But if you are someone that is dealing with loss of employment (furloughed, let go, laid off, under employed) and income, which is one of the hardest things you will go through, you can make a new goal.
You don’t have to go back to the same industry.
You can make a pivot.
Of course, there will be challenges in change but the important step is giving yourself permission to make the pivot.
